The Spanish Ministry of Industry has announced in a statement that Nissan will close its plant in Barcelona.
The Barcelona plant is Nissan’s largest production unit in Europe after the UK plant. It directly employs 2,400 people and, along with related services, about 3,000.
According to union sources, the plant closure could result in the loss of up to 20,000 jobs in the local supply chain.
The Barcelona plant mainly produced electric vans and a pick-up model well below production capacity.
The industry ministry has regretted Nissan’s decision despite more favorable offers. According to the Ministry of Industry, the redesign of the plant's profile would be less of a financial burden for Nissan than the estimated cost of one billion euros to close.
