The serial version of the BMW Vision iNEXT study, the BMW iX, has arrived. The huge recreational vehicle will go on sale in a year.
With its fifth-generation eDrive powertrain, the BMW iX, Bavaria's top-class electric leisure vehicle, can enter the scene with particularly good efficiency, high performance and excellent range. Bringing the “length and width of the X5, the height of the X6 and the size of the wheel of the X7”, the electric motors are not only sustainable (they do not use rare earths in their production) but also powerful: they last measured more than 500 horsepower. The BMW iX takes less than 5 seconds to reach 100 km / h from a standstill, its top speed has not yet been announced by the factory.
The range of the system is even better: according to internal measurements following the WLTP standard, it can cover more than 600 kilometers on a single charge. To do this, you need a battery with a capacity of 100 kWh, which can be charged with up to 200 kW: in 10 minutes we can draw enough energy for 120 kilometers from a suitable charging system. The standard 10-80 percent charge cycle takes 40 minutes, but if you only have a simple wall charger with 11 kilowatts of power, you can still fully charge the battery in 11 hours - which of course doesn’t do it well, experts recommend 80 percent. Like electric motors, batteries are made responsibly: with sustainable energy, from a significant proportion of recyclable raw materials. With that battery, that range is really impressive, as it assumes a consumption of 16 kWh, we’ll see how much it can translate into reality.
Let’s get to the design because it’s not commonplace either: the double kidney grille has been retained, but its function has changed: it only hides laser, radar, camera sensors. That’s why BMW has named it the Intelligence Panel - we hope they don’t mind if we don’t take this over.
Built on a unique aluminum platform, the iX has a form factor of 0.25, thanks to details such as frameless doors or door handles that sink into the plane of the doors when not in use. The back wall opens to its full width, which has little to do with air resistance, but is special and you can write a sentence about it. Thus.
The passenger compartment has been designed as a real lounge with special seat upholstery and a wooden table that takes the place of the floor console. Functional details and interfaces are hidden, the steering wheel is hexagonal, the display is curved.
