The development of the GR Super Sport hypersport car was allegedly halted due to a serious incident during testing. The Le Mans racing car program continues uninterrupted.
A fire broke out on the Fuji Speedway racetrack for a hitherto unknown reason, destroying a prototype of the GR Super Sport series version, citing Autaclog.com, citing Racer.com.
The street version of the GR010 Hypercar, a preliminary study of which was introduced by Toyota under the name GR Super Sport well over three years ago, was pretty close to being introduced, so if they really decided to suspend the program, there could be extremely serious reasons for it.
Fortunately, the decision doesn’t affect Toyota’s race program in Le Mans, so the 680-horsepower hybrid race car (in our pictures) doesn’t end up in the trash. Previously, manufacturers were required to build a certain number of homologations of racing cars, but now this obligation has been removed, so Toyota is not forced by the competition rules - but if they really bury the street hyperport car, potential buyers and fans of the brand will be very disappointed.
Toyota has not yet officially spoken out on the matter, so the above are just assumptions for now.
