According to the automotive supplier, one of the most dangerous accidents is the lateral collision, which causes only nearly 700 deaths per year in Germany, accounting for nearly one third of all deaths. The newly developed external airbag, according to them, can reduce the severity of passenger injuries by 40 percent in a collision from one side.
And this meant a new approach, as this airbag must open at the moment before the impact, so there is a need for sensors and a system that quickly detects the dangerous situation and decides whether to open the airbag. It has about 150 milliseconds, which is about a second.
The volume of this outer airbag is between 280 and 400 liters, which is five or eight times the driver's airbag. It opens from the threshold, increasing the lateral creasing zone.
