Google has agreed with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi vehicle group to apply the Android mobile operating system to the car media and vehicle information system.
The cars of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Group are being marketed by the vehicle information, information and entertainment center (infotainment) running on the Android operating system from 2021 onwards.
Thanks to the collaboration, vehicle drivers can use their Google navigation system or, for example, a personal assistant who responds to oral instructions without using their smartphones in the car's information center.
80 percent of global smartphones run on Android operating systems. However, the "infotainment" center of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi vehicles will be compatible with devices operating on other operating systems, according to the announcement Tuesday.
Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi has sold 10.6 million vehicles worldwide last year. Its production is expected to increase to 14 million by 2022.
