Ford has announced that it will be 12,000 European employees by the end of next year.
The headcount reduction aims at increasing the profitability of the European industry and redirecting the resources freed up through cost reductions to increase the production of electric cars.
Ford closes five factories, three in Russia and one in Britain and France.
Ford employs 51,000 people in Europe, with joint ventures accounting for 65,000.
Ford's decision on Europe also plays a role in reducing car demand on the continent.
ACEA, the European car manufacturer's representative organization, said on Thursday that it is expected that the number of new passenger cars placed on the market will fall by one percent this year instead of the estimated one-percent increase.
