As of the first of September, free parking for cars with green license plates ceased in Nagykanizsa, where parking fees were also raised from Thursday and a new downtown parking lot was opened.
At the end of June, the general assembly in Nagykanizsa discussed the transformations affecting city parking, at which time it was agreed that the previous free parking of partially or fully electric vehicles with green license plates will cease.
According to the proposal discussed at the time, the city provided free parking for environmentally friendly vehicles from 2017, after winning a tender for the construction of electric chargers. This contract would have provided free parking for cars with green license plates for five years, but the city withdrew from the agreement in 2019, so its obligation regarding free parking also ended, but it has kept it until now.
The general meeting also decided that from September the parking fee will increase by 20 percent in Nagykanizsa, so that you can park for 240 forints instead of 200 forints per hour, and for 480 forints per hour instead of 400 in Erzsébet tér, which is considered a priority. On weekdays, you have to pay a fee until 4 p.m., and parking in the city is still free on weekends.
István Szabó, the CEO of Via Kanizsa Zrt., which also operates the parking lots, reported to MTI that a new downtown parking lot was opened for motorists from Thursday. At the junction of Erzsébet tér and Magyar utca - by demolishing an area that had been neglected for decades and filling it with rubble - an opportunity to accommodate around 110 vehicles was opened by paying the lower rate.
