From Tuesday to Thursday, the police will hold a campaign aimed at avoiding pedestrian accidents at the initiative of the National Accident Prevention Committee of the National Police Headquarters (ORFK).
The communications service of the ORFK wrote on the police.hu website on Monday: in the accident prevention Zebra action, a lot of attention is paid to checking the rule-following behavior of pedestrians and drivers, using body cameras, drones and civilian vehicles, among others.
According to the announcement, in the past, an average of 2,500 pedestrians were hit on Hungarian public roads each year, of which 150 people lost their lives.
Although this number has decreased in the last two years, around 2,000 pedestrians are injured in accidents and more than 100 pedestrian run-overs end in death, they added.
They also pointed out that in the previous period, 900-1,000 cases of run-overs were caused by the fault of pedestrians, this number has decreased to about 600, or 30 percent of accidents, in the last two years. It was pointed out that about 40 percent of run-overs (750-800 accidents) take place at the designated pedestrian crossing, and approximately three percent of them are fatal.
According to the ORFK, inspections can be expected at the designated pedestrian crossings on the roads suitable for parallel traffic, which are of high risk from the point of view of traffic safety, and in their surroundings, primarily in places where there is a significant amount of road traffic.
Due to the violation of the law, drivers and pedestrians can also be warned by the police officer who is taking action, who can also impose an on-the-spot fine and file a report. In case of passing a prohibited sign, the driver can expect an administrative fine of HUF 50,000, the announcement reads.
