More than a thousand people died in traffic accidents in Romania this year, most fatal accidents were caused by pedestrians' indiscipline or speeding, the Romanian police announced on Thursday.
Between January 1 and August 30, 1,029 people lost their lives on Romanian roads, 88 fewer than in the same period last year, which means an improvement of 7.9 percent. This year, there were 253, or 8 percent, fewer traffic accidents, and the number of serious injuries decreased by 185 to 2,258 (7.6 percent) compared to the first eight months of last year.
18 percent of serious accidents were caused by pedestrians breaking the rules or drivers driving faster than the legal limit. Cyclists are responsible for 11 percent of serious accidents, in 8.2 percent of cases, crashes were caused by failure to give priority between vehicles, and in 8.2 percent, pedestrians crossing the road were run over.
This year, 1,366,000 traffic fines were issued in Romania, of which 420,000 were for speeding. The driver's license of more than 110,000 drivers was suspended, in almost half of the cases also for speeding, and in 16,000 cases for drunken driving.
For years, Romania has led the list in the European Union in terms of fatal car accidents, and in proportion to the population, most people die here in road accidents. Almost 20,000 people lost their lives on the roads in the European Union last year, 1,779 of them in Romania. Last year, around 27,000 accidents involving personal injuries occurred in the country, most of them in July and August.
