The Daimler Group must recall sixty thousand Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 diesel cars with immediate effect for service at the Bild am Sonntag, Germany.
On the basis of the German Federal Ministry of Transport's information at the request of a news agency, the German Federal Vehicle Inspectorate, Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA), has identified an unauthorized software shutdown function in the emission control system for the Euro 5 OM 651 diesel engine models.
Daimler said that it did not consider the software software objected to to be illegal, and therefore appealed against the ministry's callback order. However, the software conversion required by KBA is implemented independently by Daimler and will continue to work with the Authority as far as possible.
The software function complained of by the KBA is said to delay reaching the operating temperature in the engine cooling system and thereby keep the engine nitrogen oxide emission below the required limit during the standard measurement procedure.
According to Bild am Sonntag, the first to report on the Ministry's recall order, the technical objection to the emission control system may extend to Mercedes-Benz C and E models and may affect up to 700,000 vehicles.
