Compared to the previous year's low base, the performance of intercity passenger transport increased strongly in the first quarter of this year, that of goods transport decreased, but both fell short of the pre-epidemic level - the Central Statistical Office (KSH) stated in its assessment of transport performance.
The performance of intercity passenger transport in the first quarter was 4.9 billion passenger kilometers, 68.9 percent more than a year earlier, when traffic was low due to border closures. However, it fell short of the first quarter of 2019 by 27 percent, primarily as a result of the continued significant decline in air and bus passenger transport.
The performance of domestic passenger transport, measured in passenger kilometers, increased by 38 percent in one year. The performance realized in bus transport was 22 percent higher than in the first quarter of last year, and that of rail passenger transport 72 percent higher.
Compared to a year earlier, when the Hungarian borders were still closed, the performance of international passenger transport increased fifteenfold. The development of international traffic was mainly influenced by the eighteen-fold increase in air passenger transport - added the KSH.
The performance of goods transport amounted to 13.6 billion ton-kilometers, a decrease of 4.6 percent compared to the previous year and 11 percent compared to the first quarter of 2019. Domestically, it increased by 1.2 percent, and internationally, the performance was 7.2 percent lower compared to the previous year.
Domestically, the performance of rail and inland waterway freight transport decreased, while that of other modes increased, with road freight transport accounting for the largest share (80 percent) by 1.6 percent.
The performance of road freight transport, which also represents the largest proportion within international transport, was 4.9 percent less than in the first quarter of last year, and that of rail was 14 percent less.
