The huge battery plant of the Chinese subsidiary of BMW has chosen a specific way of social responsibility and sustainability.
When BMW Brilliance Automotive began building its new battery plant in 2018, the head of facility management came up with a brilliant idea: the undeveloped parts of the 13,000-square-foot industrial area should be used for some natural, sustainable purpose. The region (Shenyang, Liaoning Province in northeastern China) has a long tradition and prime climatic conditions for growing peanuts, so peanuts have been planted in two football field areas.
The crops yielded two tons already in the first year, and this year’s harvest was even richer: 3,200 kilograms of hazelnuts were harvested.
And how does this abundance of oilseeds contribute to the development of the region? A charity market will be held in October at BMW Brilliance Automotive’s three manufacturing plants, where employees can buy Shenyang peanuts, among others; and the proceeds will be used to support the infrastructural developments of the settlements hosting the factories.
