From Wednesday, the new function of Google Maps is also available in Hungary, which suggests environmentally friendly routes to users, who can thus also choose routes that contribute to lower fuel consumption.
Google Maps now displays not only the fastest route, but also the most fuel-efficient route, so users can approach their destinations in a more sustainable way, Google announced to MTI on Wednesday.
According to the information, the new function, including Hungary, will be available in nearly 40 European countries from Wednesday.
In the announcement, it was explained that the effect of the environmentally friendly routing function can be felt all over the world - since its introduction in the United States, Canada and Germany, about half a million tons of carbon dioxide have been released into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to removing a hundred thousand cars from traffic.
The application also takes the type of engine into account when choosing the most ideal route. Fuel savings can vary depending on the type of engine. For example, diesel engines are generally more efficient than gasoline or gas engines at higher speeds, while hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in slower, urban traffic.
So in the coming weeks, Google will let drivers planning eco-friendly routes in Europe, the US and Canada choose their engine type to get the best route and the most accurate fuel or energy efficiency estimates.
According to the announcement, the creation of the technology was made possible thanks to fuel and energy efficiency findings from the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and data from the European Environmental Protection Agency. Using this data and driving trends from Google Maps, Google developed machine learning models tailored to the most popular motorcycle types in a given region.
In the announcement, it was also mentioned that, in the name of sustainability, the navigation application will, among other things, indicate charging stations built for electric cars, and will now provide users with information on much more bicycle routes than before. In addition, it indicates nearby bicycle and scooter sharing points in more than 500 cities around the world.
