The new rules adopted by the European Parliament at its three-day plenary session in Brussels will change the labeling of tires.
The new labeling rules for car and truck tires aim to provide consumers with clear and comparable information.
Labels should be prominently displayed to consumers wherever tires are sold, including online stores. Easy-to-read QR codes should also be included on labels.
The new labeling rules also apply to so-called C3 tires for heavy vehicles, which have so far not been covered by European Union labeling rules. The labels must also include information on the maximum service life in kilometers, the wear, the retreaded tire and the adhesion measured on snow and ice. The indication of service life and wear resistance in kilometers will become mandatory once the appropriate test methods are available.
Following the approval of the EU Parliament, the legislation must be formally adopted by the Council of the European Union, after which it can enter into force on 1 May 2021. The new legislation replaces the 2009 Tire Labeling Regulation.
