Negotiations are planned soon for the sale of Daimler's plant in Hambach, near the German-French border, the German company announced on Friday.
Daimler intends to invest heavily in its carbon-neutral mobility project in the coming years, but it will need to electrify its product range and digitize its vehicles and business processes.
However, a number of measures have already been taken at the company to make its operation more cost-effective and sustainable, which is why the Germans want to restructure the capacity of their global production network - this would include the sale of the plant in France. However, Ola Källenius, chairman of the boards of Mercedes and Daimler, acknowledged that the coronavirus epidemic also played a role in the decision:
“We are continuing to transform our company and products at the right pace. In view of our large future investments, especially in electrification and digitization, we will introduce consistent measures to increase our efficiency, ”he said.
“This affects all areas of our company worldwide. In addition, the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic will create new framework conditions in the market and, in this context, we will optimize our global production network. That is why we want to start negotiations on the sale of the Hambach plant. ”
The Daimler factory in Hambach has been operating for 23 years, since 1997, where Smarts have been manufactured for years. Daimler aims to keep it that way after the sale, but the next-generation electric models will already be rolled off the production line in China in collaboration with the Geely Group in Chechnya.
