In the past, there were three sports couples for Toyota, now it is half, but it doesn't have to stay that way.
With the GT86 as a successor to Celica, Supra will soon catch up, but there is still a space left in the Toyota palette: the location of the MR2. Fans know that the name is not the Petőfi radio, but a light and compact mid-engine rear-wheel drive sports car that lived between three generations between 1984 and 2007.
According to the British Autocar magazine, the fourth series will soon come, no matter what. According to Matt Harrison, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota, the company has already "raised the issue" and MR2 would "be pleased to see it on the palette". By the way, this was already demonstrated in 2015 when the S-FR study car was introduced.
The tiny sports car would have yet another noteworthy advantage: it would have been suitable for the introduction of Toyota's recent battery-powered electric drive chain, which has recently been considered a development goal. Because the tiny, tight MR2 is not for long journeys, it is rather a short, enjoyable drive, the limited range of the electric drive chain would not be a problem for the users, and the electric torque of the electric motor would be especially worthwhile when accelerating.
