The Volkswagen Golf R, the new generation of the current top version of the genre-creating compact model, will have its world premiere on the fourth of November.
Eighteen years ago, in 2002, the Golf R32 was born, and a legend was born within the legend: the 3.2-liter, six-cylinder, 241-horsepower, all-wheel-drive sporty hatchback was followed by increasingly brutal offspring.
The 2005 vintage already knew 250 horsepower, and then in 2009 the in-line four-cylinder engine was replaced by the V6. The 32 designations became obsolete, yet the R20 could not be replaced, so the R remained. The third-generation model already knew 270 horsepower, and the fourth, in 2013, reached the magical 300-horsepower limit.
Like its predecessors, the next fifth generation brings innovative solutions with torque vector control on the rear axle, adaptive damping and electronic front differential lock. The engine will be “more powerful than ever”, but what that means numerically will only be revealed on Wednesday, November 4th.
