Volkswagen does not consider a realistic concept of retrofitting older diesel engines to improve emission values, said Reuters, an unnamed top automotive group leader.
Speaking of the possible solutions to the "diesel peak" talks on the air purity of cities with the German government, Volkswagen's senior colleague said that "there is no technically feasible option" for retrofitting engines.
At the same time, he pointed out that neither the catalyst supplier companies nor the car manufacturers themselves would be willing to guarantee the function of reducing the nitrogen oxide emissions of the retrofit equipment.
Volkswagen's official position is that the car factory is ready for any compromise to reduce emissions. "We are ready to take part in any meaningful solution that can contribute to avoiding downtown recovery," said Volkswagen spokesman.
On behalf of the government, Svenja Schulze, Minister of the Environment, calls for the retrofitting of old diesel cars, while Andreas Scheuer, Minister of Transport, advocates the replacement of old cars. Automotive companies support the position of the Minister of Transport, emphasizing that the development and subsequent licensing of the filtering equipment needed for the reconstruction would take years for Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt. During this time, much more could be done to clean the air of cities by replacing old diesel cars.
