The International Automobile Association (FIA) announced a tender for the Formula 1 exclusive transmission supplier role in 2021. Significant cost reduction step.
Although many of the 2021 Formula 1 rules and contract terms remain vague, a detail has now become clear: from 2021, single, one-vendor gearboxes will be used in the series.
Tenderers are invited to tender by the International Automobile Association (FIA) until March 3, and the selection will take place in April.
According to the announcement, the goal is to eliminate the cost of planning and manufacturing at teams with a single, multi-season concept. At the same time, the gearbox will be produced by the teams from 2021 onwards to suit the design of the drive chain and suspension.
Six of the current ten teams in F1 use their own designed and manufactured gearboxes, while Alfa Romeo and Haas buy from Ferrari, Racing Point from Merced, and Toro Rosso from Red Bull Racin.
