According to the president of the National Taxi Association, the majority of taxi drivers and passengers in Budapest are also satisfied with the uniform tariff.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony was asked about the possible abolition of the uniform taxi tariff at a press conference on another topic on Tuesday. The mayor told the journalists that they had no intention of deviating from the uniform taxi tariffs in Budapest, but were curious about the opinion of taxi drivers.
Zoltán Metál reacted to the Kossuth radio show that 89 percent of the taxi drivers they interviewed are satisfied with the current system, and passengers are also the ones who support that the number of trips has increased by 25 percent since 2013.
“This is due to the fact that the fare was and still is predictable, which gives passengers safety,” the president said, adding that the number of taxi drivers has also increased by almost 40 per cent.
According to Metal, taxi drivers expect the capital to step up screening for illegal and passenger-damaging taxi drivers and tighten sanctions. They also asked that as the number of taxi ranks decreased, the capital would hand over its own areas for this purpose.
Taxi drivers also feel that road sections taken from motorists for the purpose of cycling are a problem, for example on the Grand Boulevard. No impact study has been carried out in this regard, and the relevant professional organizations have not been asked, said Zoltán Metál.
