Buses will run instead of cogs throughout the winter, the temporary shutdown will last until the end of the planned spring track renewal, according to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) on Friday. The cog has not been running since October 3 due to track renovation; according to the company's previous announcement, the bus replacement was originally supposed to last until November 17, but due to the announced winter stoppage, the cog train will not start the next day either.
According to the statement sent to MTI, the winter break was ordered with reference to the energy and economic crisis. The Budapest Municipality, Budapest Transport Center and BKV Zrt. decided on the temporary suspension of the flight, they announced.
They wrote that, thanks to the measure, Budapest's public transport will save more than 120 million forints, and in addition, specialists will be able to carry out mandatory maintenance on the vehicles.
It was indicated that instead of the regular route, passengers can choose buses 21, 21A, 212, 212A, 212B and 221, which will run according to an extended schedule.
As it was written, rising fuel and electricity costs are a heavy burden for public transport, which is why companies owned by the capital are trying to operate Budapest's transport network more cost-effectively than usual.
It was reported that very few people travel with the 60-marked cog wheel, which is typically used by tourists and for leisure purposes, during the cold months. This means 10 percent utilization on weekdays and 30 percent at the weekend, they wrote.
In its statement issued on September 30, BKK wrote that the cogwheel track will be renovated in several places, so it will not run from October 3 until November 17.
