Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the number of new passenger cars placed on the market in the European Union fell sharply in May, by more than 50 percent.
According to a report by the Association of European Car Manufacturers (ACEA), 581,161 passenger cars were registered in the 27 member states of the European Union in May, 52.3 percent less than a year earlier.
The rate of decline slowed from 76.3 percent in April and 55.1 percent in March. In the months leading up to the global outbreak of the epidemic from China, a year-on-year decline of 7.4 percent and 7.5 percent in January was measured.
In the first five months of the year, 3,331,715 new cars were delivered in the union, 41.56 percent less than a year earlier. In all EU countries, the number of cars placed on the market also fell at a double-digit rate in May, with the largest decline, at 76.2 percent in Croatia.
In Hungary, the number of new cars delivered in May fell by 54.5 percent year-on-year to 6,472. In the first five months of the year, 45,315 new cars found owners, down 25.7 percent from the same period last year.
